Beach & Water Safety Expo Series

The annual Beach, Water & Pier Safety Expo will be held at Washington Park Beach from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Friday, May 23.

The Beach & Water Safety Expo is a multi-agency/multi-county effort to promote a safe and enjoyable time at the beach and Lake Michigan. If you are raising a family in the LaPorte County area, a visit to the Expo is a must!

Both children and adults will learn about beach safety and emergency procedures as well as lighthouse and pier safety. Rip current precautions and survival also will be emphasized. Several programs, activities, and demonstrations are planned as well.

Some of the participating agencies include the M.C. Fire Department, M.C. Police Department and Dive Team, the LaPorte County Sherriff’s Department and Dive Team, M.C. Port Authority, M.C. Park Department and Lifeguard Team, U.S. Coast Guard, American Red Cross, M.C. Emergency Management Agency, and the LaPorte County Emergency Medical Service.

Michigan City Beach & Pier Safety Month is celebrated from May 1 through May 31, and National Beach Safety Week is celebrated from May 19 to May 25.

The beautiful beaches of Northern Indiana represent a world renowned recreational resource, and the citizens of Michigan City and visitors alike are drawn to the Michigan City lighthouse, pier and catwalk each year to go fishing, take photos, or simply to enjoy a casual stroll and beautiful sunset. Lake Michigan has dangers that can be effectively managed through public awareness and the vigilance of professional lifeguards, parents, caregivers and knowledgeable bathers.

Have fun…but always act in a safe manner! This is another of the important messages delivered during the Beach Expo.

The Michigan City Parks & Recreation Department staffs Red Cross Certified lifeguards in a designated area at the Washington Park lakefront from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Guards are on duty from 10 a.m.— 5 p.m. Monday Through Friday and from 10 a.m. — 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Mayor Oberlie said, “We ask everyone who visits the lakefront to respect Lake Michigan and exercise sound common sense. Obey all beach rules. They are in place to protect our citizens and visitors and to help ensure that they have a great day on our beaches.”
