What Can the Public Expect?

Public involvement is very important to this study process. We are very interested in receiving your input. Your role is critical to the consensus building process that this study embraces.

As shown in the project schedule, three public meetings are proposed. These public Open Houses will be held at key milestones in the project schedule. The first public Open House is scheduled for September 8, 2011 at the Michigan City, City Hall, Lower Level from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00p.m.  Attendees can review the alignments, project data and the planning and engineering efforts to date. At this meeting, a power point presentation will be shown at 5:00 p.m. and again at 7:00 p.m. to review the study objectives and the proposed alignments. Attendees will have a chance to review the project exhibits, add input, and ask questions of the consultant project team and members of the City and NICTD or submit a comment card.

The second public Open House will be held after the initial screening process of the alternatives takes place.  Attendees can review how the alternatives rank as compared to the goals and evaluation criteria established at the beginning of the project.  Public input at this meeting will be used to refine the screening results.

The final Open House will be held near the end of the study. At this point, the attendees will be able to gain insight on the preferred alignment and hear
about “next steps” including funding opportunities and implementation guidelines.

In addition to the public Open Houses, the study is being directed by a Management Oversight Group with representatives from the City and from NICTD. In addition, individual meetings with key stakeholders have been held as part of the data collection phase. Finally, the project team will meet quarterly with a stakeholder’s advisory committee consisting of members of review agencies, environmental groups, economic development entities and other appropriate bodies.

Define where meeting announcements will be posted, in what time frame of the meeting day.
Meeting announcements will be posted to this website no later than three weeks prior to the public Open House. In addition, other forms of advertisement will be used including direct email, radio announcements, and the local newspaper. If you or the organization that you represent would like to receive an email with regard to the public Open Houses, please add your name to the mailing list by filling out a comment card on this website.
