Animal Feeding

Each year tons of food passes through the zoo’s diet kitchen. It takes a lot to feed the Zoo's more than 200 hungry mouths each day.  Some of the food comes from local grocery stores or other human consumption suppliers.  Other food comes from a number of companies that specialize in making formulated feeds for zoo animals.

Each year, the Zoo’s animals chomp through about 50 tons of food- that’s 100,000 pounds of fruits, vegetables, meats, grains, hay, and feeds!

Animal Feeding

Average annual amounts are as follows:

  • 25.6 tons of hay
  • 19.6 tons fresh fruits and vegetables
  • 2.6 tons of meat, including
