Planning & Inspection Department

The Planning & Inspection Department promotes the comprehensive growth and sustainability of the City and its neighborhoods.The department oversees the City’s zoning and land use policies and, through its economic development and housing bureaus, employs a variety of resources to encourage business and real estate development. In addition, the department also receives, assesses, and works to resolve code enforcement complaints and violations.

Planning

The Planning Department is chartered with ensuring an orderly arrangement of overall designs and objectives for new projects within the City. They use various methods for achieving a detailed formulation of a program of action, projecting the realization of achievements in an orderly arrangement for an overall city design or objective.

Zoning

The Zoning Department arranges the partitions of the city by ordinance into sections reserved for different purposes (i.e., residential zones for residences, commercial zones for businesses, and industrial zones for manufacturing).

Inspection

The Inspection Department is responsible for issuing building permits and performing inspections for construction and remodeling projects within the city limits. Building inspectors determine the conditions of all types of dwellings (homes, apartments, offices, industrial centers, etc) by way of building inspections, for the purpose of safeguarding the health and safety of the occupants and the general public.

Code Enforcement

The Code Enforcement Division of the Planning & Inspection Department is charged with the duty of ensuring every building and yard in every neighborhood is maintained at a quality consistent with community standards and expectations. The division is responsible for enforcing City ordinances in an effort to promote and protect the public health, safety, and welfare of those individuals living, working, and doing business in Michigan City. Effective code enforcement needs the cooperation of every property owner and all tenants to build stable neighborhoods and community pride.
