Traffic

The Traffic Division concentrates its efforts on enforcement in high traffic areas, in areas where traffic complaints are received, and in identified locations where collisions are likely to occur. They accomplish this by speed enforcement, videotaping intersections, patrolling for aggressive drivers, and other various enforcement initiatives. A primary goal for the Traffic Division is the efficient and effective movement of traffic on our roadways.

The Special Weapons and Tactics (S.W.A.T.) Unit of the Michigan City Police Department is an elite team of officers from various units within the Department who volunteer to serve as S.W.A.T. team members while also performing regular duties in other Divisions. Our S.W.A.T. officers are specially trained to perform high-risk operations that fall outside of the abilities of regular officers. Team members are required to be on an on-call status and need to be ready to go at a moments notice. S.W.A.T.’s primary function is addressing special threat situations including serving high-risk search and arrest warrants, barricaded suspects, hostage rescue, counter-terrorism, and engaging heavily-armed criminals. In addition, the S.W.A.T. Team provides support for the Street Crimes Unit (Narcotics) operations requiring suspect takedowns, arrests and large scale arrest sweeps.
