The City of Michigan City has a diverse and talented community of skilled workers, craftspersons, and laborers who are qualified to work in the construction industry. Therefore, the City has implemented Chapter 66, Division 3 of our local code of ordinance, also known as the “Michigan City Local Hiring Program,” to encourage the hiring of local residents.

Each contractor who works on a municipal construction project for which more than $150,000.00 is spent agrees to meet the Resident Hiring Quota of 50% of the total hourly wages paid for the construction project at the construction site. The Michigan City Human Rights Department works to maintain the Hiring Registry List of residents who have expressed interest in working on construction projects along with their skill sets. The list is available to contractors as a resource to find available local workforce.

To be added to the Hiring Registry List, you must complete the WorkOne Workkeys testing and include copy of your results with your registry application. New candidates can complete the application online or by visiting the Human Rights Department at City Hall. Applications WILL NOT be accepted without a copy of your Workkeys test results.
